FP01 REFERENCE CONTROL PANEL / ROTARY03 REV 1.1
ROTARY03 is a reference board that operates FP01 with three rotary encoders (with push switches). Turning a knob sends UP / DOWN and pressing it sends ON / OFF v commands over RS485 to operate circuit groups configured in FP01 in advance. Connecting ROTARY02N extension boards by FFC cable adds encoders in pairs, up to 7.

01 — HOW IT WORKS
SAIence sells the common control board FP01 and the software that runs on it. ROTARY03 is a reference board provided as one example of an input device that operates FP01. After confirming the operating feel and command flow with the evaluation test board, the customer builds the production panel to suit the application and design.
NOTEThis page presents ROTARY03 as one example of an input device that operates FP01. For FP01 itself, see the FP01 product page →.
02 — EXPLODED VIEW
ROTARY03 consists of four parts: the printed circuit board, plate, knobs and back box. The back box is embedded in the wall, the board's encoders pass through the plate and are fixed with nuts, and the knobs are pushed onto the shafts. EXPLODE in the 3D viewer above switches between exploded and assembled views.
NOTEDimensions and the back box shape follow the drawing “ROTARY03_3D_Rev1.1 plate size check” (back box = two parts, BOX and BOX_T). In the 3D viewer, the back box, knobs and nuts follow the drawing; the plate is a simplified shape for illustration.
03 — EXPANSION
The base unit has three rotary encoders. Connecting ROTARY02N extension boards (2 encoders each) with a ribbon cable (FFC cable) adds rotary encoders in pairs. Up to 2 ROTARY02N boards, up to 7 knobs. ROTARY03 reads the extension board inputs via FFC and handles all transmission to RS485.
| Knobs | Board configuration | Plate | Back box length |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3 | ROTARY03 | 208 × 24 mm | 200 mm |
| 5 | ROTARY03 + ROTARY02N × 1 | 288 × 24 mm Reference | 280 mm Reference |
| 7 | ROTARY03 + ROTARY02N × 2 | 368 × 24 mm Reference | 360 mm Reference |
* The knob pitch is 40 mm. Each additional pair adds 80 mm of length (“Reference” is calculated from this pitch).
04 — SYSTEM
ROTARY03 is powered from an external DC supply connected to its terminal block. The PSoC 5LP on ROTARY03 converts knob operations into commands and sends them to FP01 over RS485. FP01 operates together all circuits that belong to the circuit group configured in advance.
Supplied through the ROTARY03 terminal block. The ROTARY02N extension boards are powered through the FFC cable.
Terminal blocksReads encoder turns and pushes and generates v commands with the group number assigned to each knob.
PSOC 5LPFP01 on the main board receives the v command and identifies the circuits that belong to the specified group.
FP01UP / DOWN (dimming) and ON / OFF for all circuits in the group together.

05 — COMMANDS
ROTARY03 sends v commands (8 bytes) to circuit groups configured in FP01 in advance. Each knob is assigned a destination group number; each click of rotation sends UP / DOWN, and each push alternately sends ON / OFF. Turn the knobs below (drag, wheel or ◀▶) or press the center to try it.
* Group numbers can be changed from 001 to 255 (see “Group setup” below). The knobs in the 3D viewer turn along with them.
LAST COMMAND
| Operation | Command | Example (group 001) | FP01 action |
|---|---|---|---|
| Turn right (1 click) | v + 3-digit group + up__ | v001up__ | Raise the group level by one step (UP) |
| Turn left (1 click) | v + 3-digit group + down | v001down | Lower the group level by one step (DOWN) |
| Push (OFF → ON) | v + 3-digit group + on__ | v001on__ | Turn the group circuits ON |
| Push (ON → OFF) | v + 3-digit group + off_ | v001off_ | Turn the group circuits OFF |
* Byte 1 is 'v', bytes 2–4 are the group number (3 ASCII digits), and bytes 5–8 are the instruction (4 ASCII characters). The ON / OFF state of a knob is indicated by its LED and the operation sound.
06 — GROUP SETUP
The destination group number of the v commands is assigned to each knob by sending a 12-byte setup command (b command) over RS485. The setting is stored in the ROTARY03 EEPROM and kept when power is off. Knobs on the ROTARY02N extension boards (4–7) are also specified to ROTARY03 by knob number.
COMMAND FORMAT — JOIN
Sending this command sets the group number of the v commands sent by turning and pushing the knob to this value (for example, group 005 gives v005up__).
| Purpose | Command (12 bytes) | Example (switch address 001) | Reply |
|---|---|---|---|
| Assign a group to a knob | b + 3-digit address + joi + 1-digit knob number + 4-digit group | b001joi10005Knob 1 → group 005 | Addr0001Btn#0001Join0005 |
| Read the assignments | b + 3-digit address + rggg + 0000 | b001rggg0000 | ReadSyncGrpsAddr0001 Btn#0001 Grp0005 …(per knob) |
| Set the number of connected knobs | b + 3-digit address + wbtn + 4-digit knob count | b001wbtn00055 knobs with ROTARY02N × 1 | WBTNAdr: 001 |
* The switch address is the address of each ROTARY03, set by SWITCH_ADDRESS_TXT in the firmware (default 001).
* Group numbers are stored in EEPROM as one byte, so set them in the range 001–255 (firmware Rev1.1.5).
* Sending joi clears the knob's synchronized group (jsg) registration. Replies end with a space and CR LF.
